Don't Wait for Inspiration

People love to wait for inspiration before they begin writing lyrics. I've done this. I think it's partially a fear of writing the wrong thing. or writing something no one will like. But I've learned if you just write for the sake of writing you'll get more inspiration from those writings. This includes everything from, lyrics, poems, and novels.

Don't wait for the perfect song to hit you like a brick, grab it by writing!  Let your imagination run, create, or just write about
nothing in particular. Always be in search of that inspiration. Try writing for 20 minutes a day. That's not too much to ask. Don't worry about the contents. Write about your dog, or your view from your back porch.

I once wrote everything I heard while I was sitting in a restaurant. Obviously I'm not going to use random noises and conversations as lyrics to a song, but one sentence made me thing of one topic, which made me think of a word, which lead me to think of a phrase, which ended with a song title, or a few lines of a song.  The mind loves to wander around, so putting your thoughts down on paper helps streamline them toward a goal.

If you're having trouble writing about anything, I know it's difficult for some people to even begin the first sentence, start by describing an object near you. By writing about inanimate objects you deflect your emotions, which in my opinion and in my experience is what people have trouble with.

Once you get use to writing about that, move on to your pets, than to other people, than yourself. Describe visuals, smells, tastes, even the way something feels when you touch it. Once you make your way to writing about the people around you and yourself describe your emotions you and the emotions others may feel. Non of it has to be real, if an author can write a fictional novel, you can write a fictional song.
